Located in Peel, Street, Bendigo, in close proximity to the CBD, Quarry Hill Primary School serves an older, well-established residential area. Established on its current site in 1910, the school’s traditional red brick building features a unique quadrangle design that proves easy access and interaction between classrooms. The school currently has an enrolment of 232 pupils.
The Quarry Hill school community has determined a set of values which guide all aspects of our work.
Our strong community relationships mean a positive partnership between the staff and parents. The school community is committed to the provision of a safe, caring, and harmonious educational environment in which children share the responsibility for positive behaviours. The school strives for high standards in literacy and numeracy, supports and fosters the arts and sport participation and encourages curriculum delivery strategies that cater for all.
The school is committed to the further implementation of `best practice’ in literacy and numeracy. Early Years programs and strategies assist us to increase student achievement in both areas. We have a specialist Reading Recovery teacher, LOTE (Indonesian) teacher, Music teacher and Art teacher. The school has an on-going commitment to providing students with the best possible access to computers and to utilising learning technologies to extend their learning experiences. The school has made a commitment to continue with 1:1 mobile technology next year after a successful trial with Grade 6 students in 2009.
In addition to VELS, supporting programs are provided in the following areas: Library, piano tuition, jazz ballet, Junior School Council, Buddies, camps and excursions, bi-annual school production, swimming, gymnastics and Religious Education.
Members of the Quarry Hill Primary School community are justifiably proud of our school. Parents are willingly involved in the school through participation in School Council, Parents and Friends Association, Early Literacy program, regular classroom activities, extra-curricula sporting programs, excursions, camps, clubs and working-bees. Through Junior School Council students are encouraged to take responsibility for various aspects of school organisation. Recommendations from Junior School Council meetings are addressed at regular School Council meetings and treated with the same consideration as with other sub-committees of School Council.
A Before and After School Care Program operates each school day. This service provides excellent care and stimulating activities between the hours of 6.45am to 8.45am and 3.30pm to 6.00pm.
A partial refurbishment of school buildings was completed in 2000, with new toilets, roofing, guttering, heating and air-conditioning being installed. While School Council has made the completion of further stages in the upgrading process a priority, regional resourcing has yet to commit to this. Through the substantial Stimulus Package and National School Pride funding the school will have a new multi-purpose facility encompassing art, music and a kitchen area.
The school will have 10 classrooms in 2010 (all classrooms have Interactive Whiteboards), a well stocked library, a teacher resource room, and a separate art room. A multi-purpose room, adjacent to the main building, will be used for music and Out of Hours School Care and other programs.
The grounds have been developed with large asphalt areas for basketball, netball and other ball games, astro-turf play areas, a vegetable garden, ‘chook’ nook and a natural bush adventure area. Gardens at the front and sides of the school are well established and maintained. Native trees and shrubs are being planted progressively to add to an attractive environment.
Quarry Hill Primary School strives to provide seven years of primary education which maximise student abilities and produce well-adjusted, responsible and self-reliant students with the skills necessary to confidently undertake their secondary education and participate in `life-long’ learning. |
